US Army developing MUM-TX for Apache control of all UAVs
The US Army is to increase the scope of the manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) capabilities of its Boeing AH-64E Apache attack helicopter to include all unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) fielded by the US military, a senior service official said on 7 June.Speaking at the Apache production facility in Mesa, Arizona, US Army programme manager Colonel Jeffrey Hager said that a new MUM-TX capability is being developed to expand the set of UAVs that the crew of the attack helicopter is able to control from the current General Atomics MQ-1C Gray Eagle and Textron Shadow Version 2 (V2) platforms to every UAV in service with the army, US Air Force (USAF), US Navy (USN), and US Marine Corps (USMC)."We are now working on MUM-TX to allow the E [model Apache] to talk to any [unmanned] system on the battlefield. Currently, only the Gray Eagle and Shadow V2 platforms fitted with the Tactical Common Data Link [TCDL] can do this," Col Hager said, adding that MUM-TX will roll out this same Level 4...

How scientists are using drones to measure the effects of climate change
Journalists like to lean on anecdotes to tell stories about climate change, but for climate scientists, data is everything. But data collection is seldom a quick or inexpensive task, especially when that data is best acquired via a bird's eye view of, say, an undulating coastline or a vast expanse of ice.Fortunately, drones (also known as unmanned aerial vehicles [UAVs], or unmanned aerial systems [UASs]) can serve as robotic avian minions, filling niches for which the conventional methods of aerial data collection? — ?like chartering planes or tapping into satellite data? — ?are poorly suited.Drones are not new, nor are climate scientists only now discovering their utility as research tools. "Back in 1998, we used what was considered a smaller UAV at that time" for studying ice cover in the Arctic, says James Maslanik, a research professor emeritus from the aerospace engineering sciences department at the University of Colorado-Boulder. "It was a cutting-edge system, it...

Drone-Helicopter Teams Performing ‘Very Well’ Against ISIS
Over the smoking sands of Iraq, the military is coming to rely on formations of 20-foot drones, working with Apache attack helicopters against the Islamic State. Such operations have just pushed the Textron Shadow UAV past 1 million flight hours, becoming the first of the Army’s mid-range, or Group III drones, to hit that milestone. The Army is now talking publicly about the first heavy attack reconnaissance squadron to deploy and return with the Apache-Shadow combination, the service’s Shadow product manager told reporters in a conference call on Monday. That would be 3-6 Cavalry out of Fort Bliss, Texas, which returned from Iraq two weeks ago.“We are starting our after-action reviews with them, from an Apache standpoint and a Shadow standpoint, going and talking to the unit, how did the mission go,” said. Lt. Col. Tory Burgess. “The information that we’re getting back is that the Shadows performed very well.” The Shadow that actually took the type past the 1-million-hour mark belongs ...
